This made me think about how much peace of mind comes from having your own foundation. Even outside of tech, the idea of owning your pipes fits with my work. When you know where your customers live and how to reach them, you breathe differently. There’s something empowering about reducing fragility instead of just chasing growth. I’m grateful for this perspective so thank you Idris Elijah!

This made me look at my own setup a little differently. I’ve definitely chosen whatever was easiest in the moment instead of thinking long-term about control. It works… until it doesn’t. And then you realize how much of your music is sitting inside someone else’s system. The part about ownership giving you room to take bigger swings feels true. When you know you’re not trapped, you experiment differently. That shift from convenience to control feels bigger than I wanted to admit. I got a lot from this issue today so thank you Idris Elijah!

Mmmh, this hit me. “And then you realize how much of your music is sitting inside someone else’s system.” Ownership really is a path to creative freedom. So glad you got a ton out of this issue. 🤩🤗🤗

This reframed freedom in a way I hadn’t fully considered. I tend to think about creative freedom as emotional or artistic, not structural. The idea that ownership is what actually makes experimentation safer makes a lot of sense to me. It’s not about rejecting platforms, it’s about not being trapped inside them. That shift from access to durability is going to stick with me. I appreciate how clearly you laid this out for us Idris!

I haven’t really built out the infrastructure side of my art yet, so this made me pause. I’ve focused so much on making the work that I’ve treated the backend like something I’ll figure out later. But the idea that ownership creates creative safety hit. I can see how not having a real home for the work keeps me slightly cautious, even if I don’t admit it. This made me rethink what freedom actually requires so thank you for this eye opening newsletter Idris Elijah!

You got it! Ownership creates creative safety, and thus the state we desire most. In the thick of it creating and drafting, experimenting and taking action. Glad you got something out it!! 🤩🤗

As someone focused on writing, this made me rethink what being serious actually means. I’ve spent so much energy on craft but not enough on infrastructure. The reminder that email is relationship, not just distribution, makes so much sense. It’s easy to ignore the backend when you’d rather be drafting, but I can see how building the foundation changes the long game. Thank you Idris Elijah for showing us this important angle!

Right, email is relationship not just a channel of distribution. I’m with you, I’d rather be creating and making stuff, than doing administrative work in the backend to make sure my but is covered. But if you’re serious, you do what you must. You’re most welcome, Chloe! 🤩🙌🏾
