For years, I was that creative drowning in half-finished projects. I had drafts everywhere—blog posts, podcast notes, sketches, even an outline for a book. But none of it ever saw the light of day.
It wasn’t that I lacked discipline or ideas. It was that I lacked clarity. I didn’t know what my authentic voice was or what direction I should take. And without that, I was constantly second-guessing myself.
One day, I had a challenging conversation with a friend who asked:
“Why do you keep abandoning your projects? You’re talented, but I never see you finish.”
That stung.
But it was also the turning point. I realized I needed a framework for defining my unique creative voice and direction. Something that would help me stop chasing every shiny idea and finally commit to the ones that mattered.
That framework became the exact process I’ve now put into my new eBook: How to Define Your Unique Voice and Direction as an Independent Creative.
It’s everything I wish I had when I felt stuck—practical steps, journal prompts, and real-world guidance to help you:
Cut through the noise of too many ideas.
Identify the voice that feels authentic (not “salesy”).
Create a roadmap that keeps you moving forward.
If you’ve ever felt scattered, this guide is for you. It’s the resource I built for my younger self—the one desperate for clarity but unsure where to start.

💡Question: After reading this post, where do you see yourself creatively in five years? Share it in the comments so we can brainstorm with the community.
You’ve done a great job of showing us the importance of finding your authentic voice and being consistent once you find an idea you can commit to finishing. I’ve been reading your newsletters since the beginning and became a paid subscriber early on in your Substack journey. You’ve shown the community through action that all things are possible through consistently being your most authentic self. Congratulations on publishing an ebook today Idris! I will share this and continue to support your future endeavors. Thank you for sharing your insights and light with us!
My five-year creative vision is to show my daughter what persistence looks like by finishing projects, not just starting them. I’ve thought about starting a mother daughter YouTube channel where we sing and dance together since that has already created a strong bond between us. I want her to see that finding your voice means following through. You’ve done just that with publishing an ebook and I think that’s wonderful! As you know I enjoy your content very much and wish you much success Idris Elijah!!
