This newsletter made me think about how much of ourselves is encoded in what we love. I started listing my own top 10 albums and it was like flipping through snapshots of my growth. Heartbreaks, breakthroughs, everything. Much of my favorite music goes back to when I was very little up until today. It’s comforting in a way…realizing your taste evolves because you evolve. Music really is like a mirror, it shows you to yourself if you listen long enough. I never thought about it that way before. As a lifelong lover of music I enjoyed this perspective today Idris!
I’ve always thought of my favorite albums like journals. Every era of my life has a soundtrack. But I never thought to analyze that list to see what it reveals about me as a creator. Now I’m thinking of doing this with books and poems too. It’s wild how what we love most can quietly shape the voice we build. What I value, what I’m healing from, what I want to write about is all right there in my favorite music and books. Thank you Idris Elijah for sharing this and for giving me some new angles to explore this weekend!
My daughter and I always share songs with each other and reading this made me realize how much that exchange shapes both of us. The music I introduce her to tells her who I am and the music she loves reminds me who I was when I was younger. It’s this ongoing dialogue between generations and now I want to explore that even more consciously. This weekend I plan to do the top 10 favorite album prompt on ChatGPT with my daughter so we can discuss what it says about us through our music. Thank you for this fun and engaging idea Idris Elijah and have a great weekend!
I loved this one so much. It reminded me why I fell in love with music in the first place. I’ve been so focused lately on learning the technical side of production that I kind of forgot how much my taste shaped my sound. Reading this made me want to revisit the albums that made me start writing in the first place and figure out what they’ve been trying to teach me all along. I’m going to make my top 10 albums list this weekend and see what I learn. Great list btw, especially Adele and Amy! Thank you for doing another music issue Idris Elijah and Happy Friday to you!!
