8 Billion Stories, One Consciousness: Why We’re All More Connected Than We Think

In a world that often feels divided, what if the key to true connection lies within our shared consciousness?
Have you ever gotten an idea for a business or product and didn't act upon it because of limiting factors, but then later, you found out someone acted on said idea and made a boatload of money?
Yeah, I've been there a few times too.
This is a prime example of the shared consciousness.
We do not own our ideas; we only own the execution. It's not like I could sue Elon Musk for stealing the business model I developed in high school that helped him make Tesla become one of the world's most valuable companies in terms of market capitalization.
He didn't know who I was, and I didn't know who he was--he just had the money and knowledge to take action on an idea.
The idea of universal consciousness isn't readily available to most. When you first encounter it, you might feel like you're being robbed of all your best ideas. But that's the thing: you don't and can't own an idea.
You can only own the execution.
However, the concept of Universal Consciousness can bridge the gap between isolation and connection. It can foster empathy on both a personal and global level.
Today, we'll define Universal Consciousness, examine its effects on isolation and empathy, and share practical ways to apply it in everyday life. While also addressing its limitations and ongoing debates surrounding it.
What is Universal Consciousness?
Universal Consciousness is the idea that all beings--and perhaps the universe itself--are linked by a shared awareness or essence.
This concept traces back to ancient thinkers like Anaxagoras, who spoke of "Nous" (mind or intelligence) and appears in modern theories like panpsychism, which suggests consciousness is a fundamental property of the universe.
While some see it as a spiritual truth, others debate its scientific basis. Blending philosophy and emerging research into one intriguing conversation.
There isn't anything superficial about discussions on Universal Consciousness or oneness. Many aren't ready to have this conversation.
Reducing Isolation Through Interconnectedness
Psychologically, recognizing that we share experiences with others can shift feelings of loneliness into a sense of belonging and shared humanity.
Philosophically, the idea of "oneness" suggests we're never truly alone, as our consciousness connects us to everyone and everything.
Whether you look at this topic psychologically or philosophically, if you were to take a step back and review your life experiences, you will begin to see things that are just human. Experiences that are shared by every living human being on this planet.
From the eyes-wide-open experiences of babyhood to the struggles of adolescence and the weight of adulthood. Every human on this planet shares many basic experiences that we often take for granted.
It's easy to think that we are alone. That no one has our experiences. To a certain extent, this is true. However, two opposing things can be true at the same time. While your life and your story are unique to you, you also have shared experiences that every human on this earth has experienced at some point in their life.
Practices like group therapy or mutual aid networks show how interconnectedness can heal isolation in tangible ways.
When we see ourselves in others, the walls of isolation begin to crumble.
Fostering Global Empathy
Universal Consciousness dissolves the divide between "self" and "other," making it easier to feel and act with compassion.
Studies, like those on the empathy-altruism hypothesis, show that understanding others’ emotions drives selfless behavior.
Something I learned late in my twenties is that through understanding oneself, you can understand others. That's why one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs growing up was Man in the Mirror. Michael was more than aware of the universal nature of human existence. It starts and ends with ourselves.
Be the change you want to see in the world.
Focus on your development, and the rest will follow.
Whether it's because you become an example that others want to model their lives after. Or you deepen your understanding of others by deepening your understanding of yourself. This enables you to better help those who have not met themselves fully.
Activities such as meditation or group volunteering can strengthen this empathetic connection.
Be willing to connect with another and put yourself in their shoes.
Believe it or not, everyone can teach you something, even if it seems that that is not the case. We all have lived experiences, opinions, and preconceived notions about the world and the people in it. True connection comes when the differences between one person and another fade away, and we're able to come together and connect universally to human existence.
There are over 8 billion people in the world.
That's over 8 billion stories to be told.
Not everyone has the luxury of being able to log on to the Internet and share their experiences with an audience. But we do have the ability to connect with the people in our communities and find those stories that can then shape the lives we live.
Yes, the world is shrinking because of the internet, but for some, it's easy to get trapped in the idea that standing in a room filled with people, we are alone.
There is always something we can use to connect with others.
Practical Applications and Enhancements
The key to helping you expand your awareness, allowing you to feel more connected to others and the world is through meditation and mindfulness.
Meditation is the cornerstone of self-development. Where you listen to your thoughts and become more aware of the universe within you.
Mindfulness, on the other hand, is all about being present in the moment and can be developed through meditation. It's a double-edged sword because, on one end, you learn to sustain meta-attentive awareness toward the contents of one's mind in the present moment. On the other end, also being thoughtful when interacting with someone new or familiar.
We all know life is tough, and with that in mind we can choose to be there for each other versus stepping out of ourselves to worsen someone's condition.
Joining group activities--whether a local club or a global movement--brings the idea of interconnectedness to life.
Take a moment to think: When have you felt deeply connected to someone or something beyond yourself? How did it change your perspective?
Limitations and Ongoing Debates
The empirical challenge is that there's little direct scientific proof of Universal Consciousness, making it a topic that spans philosophy, spirituality, and science.
Some embrace it as a unifying truth, while skeptics question its measurability or relevance.
It's easy to say that something you can't touch or measure is irrelevant. However, I implore you to remember those moments where you've had an idea, and someone else just so happened to get the same idea.
If that isn't proof there is a Universal Consciousness at work, I don't know what else to say.
Nevertheless, exciting questions remain, like how empathy and consciousness might connect in the brain--research that could deepen our understanding of the world and our role in it.
Quick Recap: United in Consciousness
Universal Consciousness offers a lens to see ourselves as part of a greater whole, reducing isolation and inspiring empathy that can heal divisions.
Try a mindfulness exercise or reach out to your community—small steps toward feeling this connection firsthand.
In recognizing our shared consciousness, we find not only connection but also the empathy to heal a divided world.

I’ve mentioned two things in your other newsletters that are examples of experiencing shared consciousness. One is the tradition of watching the sunset with my daughter after doing the same thing with my mother. These are quiet and humbling moments where my daughter and I connect with each other and also with nature. Sunsets, forests and the ocean remind us that there is so much more out there that is bigger then ourselves. I also can see my daughter experiencing shared consciousness through her love of dance. Watching her performances with her dance group shows a connectedness that is beyond words. It’s really beautiful to watch. This was a very lovely topic to discuss and a nice way to start the weekend. Thank you Idris Elijah and have a great weekend!
I feel this connectedness with my best friend. There are times she will reach out to me and say “I can feel something is wrong. Are you ok?” And she’s right! She had no clue from me that I was going through something but because our friendship has been about forming a deeper connection it’s like we can hear each other through silence. The same thing will happen when I will call her and she will say she was just thinking about me when I reached out. It’s very special when you have people like that. You’re so right, it does make us feel less alone in this big beautiful world. I’m interested in learning how this can be applied in other ways. I love the meditation idea and will explore that more. Fascinating topic Idris Elijah!
