My favorite section was the one on friction. I don’t always avoid making art because I don’t want to create. Sometimes it’s because getting everything ready feels like work before the work even starts. That was such a simple observation but it made me look at my own routine differently. I enjoy how these newsletters mix practical ideas with concepts that stick in your head long after you’ve finished reading. Thank you Idris Elijah and looking forward to the next Weekly Proof!
I really like the way you reframed discipline here. The line “The first victory is contact” was the one that stuck with me because I think a lot of us make the starting line way bigger than it needs to be. I’ve noticed a theme running through your recent newsletters. Proof, systems, identity and now discipline and they all seem to build on each other. Instead of trying to remember everything, I’m starting to see one bigger picture. Thank you Idris for another great read!
Saying “work on the album” can feel overwhelming because there are so many decisions packed into those four words. Reducing the goal to something as simple as playing eight bars takes away a lot of the pressure I feel sometimes without lowering the standard. I also like that your recent flagship newsletters don’t feel disconnected. They’re slowly building a creative philosophy instead of just offering random productivity tips. Thank you Idris Elijah for putting so much thought into these issues!
I love the idea of making the minimum action small enough to survive a busy day. Between a 9-5, my daughter and everything else, it’s easy to think that if I can’t do a full session then why bother? I can see that a few minutes still count and that consistency doesn’t always have to look impressive. That’s a mindset I’ll take with me this week. Thank you Idris Elijah for sharing these ideas!
