Music is a big part of our household. Me and my daughter are always singing or dancing to something! I’ve been trying to carve out time to create again and this reminded me how a little spark (like an underlick!) can reignite the whole process. I never heard of the word underlick before but now I can’t unhear it. It’s like the hook before the hook. I’ll definitely be listening to some of my favorite songs this weekend to explore this more. Thank you again Idris Elijah!

The imagery of you two dancing and dining together is so wholesome 🥹 Love the insight you have about an underlick being the hook before the hook. I do this thing where I can listen to a song for like 5 seconds and determine if I like it or not. Since, if I don’t like the underlick, it’s unlikely I’ll like the rest of the song. You’re most welcome 🤗

I’ve been thinking about what the “underlick” would be in writing. I think it’s the emotional rhythm in your voice that holds everything together. It’s not always the plot or structure. It’s something that’s felt by the reader. I like how you show that an underlick can really be the heartbeat of many types of creativity, even beyond music. It’s a great way to find the repeating theme or image that keeps showing up in your work. Well done Idris!

Very interesting insight! I think as creators we have to find the underlick for our particular craft. Love this thought. Thanks Brian!

This reminded me how writers sometimes get obsessed with that “perfect line” that anchors a whole paragraph or chapter. I go through this often when I write. The idea of an underlick feels like something quiet but essential that everything else builds around. I feel like the underlick is your tone or your pacing. You can switch genres or topics but your voice keeps threading everything together underneath. That’s what readers come back for. A very interesting topic today Idris Elijah!

I really enjoyed your insight here, Chloe. The idea that an underlick can be something quiet but essential. And that for you the underlick is tone and pacing. Very interesting 🤔

I play guitar and sometimes write songs so I’m familiar with underlicks and have felt the power of them in songs I love. It’s amazing how something so subtle can define an entire song’s identity! I’ve built entire tracks around little melodic ideas that kept popping in my head. Your breakdown of underlicks made me realize I need to be more intentional about saving these little snippets. I love the idea of building a vault of grooves just waiting for their moment when the time is right. Very inspiring read Idris Elijah!
